Our Charts/Dashboards have the ability for a Viewer (end user) to select a new parameter value while on a Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard without having to navigate back to the Starting Chart/Dashboard. Viewers typically have to drill back-up to the original dashboard to change the parameter being passed to the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard. Having Viewers drill back-up is be a less efficient design.
Understanding Efficient Design
First, in a drilldown, an input parameter can be used in place of a pivot. If you use this method, the filtered field cannot exist as an axis utilizing a pivot. The benefit of this method is that an end user can select a new filter value from the Parameterized Picklist on the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard without navigating back to the Starting Chart/Dashboard as one does with a pivot. This would change the pivots to input parameters on the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard, which allows the designer the set initial values, and if an end user were to open the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard directly the information would still be meaningful.
Chart SA – Page Hits by Country (Map)
Selecting a Country as shown in Starting Chart Selection the user will drilldown to a new chart/dashboard and pass the Y2-value to the Chart/dashboard parameter as shown in Target or Drilldown Chart. If a user opens the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard directly the Initial Value Australia will be filtered on the dashboard. With this method on the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard the end user can select a different filter value directly from the Target or Drilldown Chart/Dashboard without having to navigate back to the Starting Chart/Dashboard as you would with a pivot.
